Migraine headaches are powerful headaches. It causes intense pain or a pulsing sensation on one side of your head. Often, it occurs along with the symptoms like vomiting or nausea, and extreme sensitivity to light. Migraine may last for hours to days, and pain might become severe over time.

Some people experience warning symptoms called an aura, that can happen before or along with headache. This aura may be associated with visual disturbances like light flashes or blind spots. Some other disturbances include tingling sensation on one side of the face or in a single arm or in a single leg and even faces speaking difficulty.

Causes Of Migraine Headaches

The exact cause of migraines isn’t fully discovered, but studies say that genetics, chemical imbalances, and some environmental factors might appear to play a role in these type of headaches. Brainstem changes and its interactions with the major pain pathway nerve (trigeminal nerve) may be a reason for the cause.

Likewise, changes in the serotonin(brain chemicals) that help to control pain in the nervous system might be a reason.

Women are more likely to experience Migraine headaches than men. Some other factors that trigger migraines include:

  • Hormonal changes
  • Weather changes
  • Specific foods & Drinks
  • Stress
  • Sensory stimuli
  • Sleeping disorders or wake-sleep pattern changes
  • Using certain medications
  • Some physical stress
  • Hereditary

Treatment For Migraine Headaches

There is no perfect cure for migraines, we can either prevent them, or the symptoms can be treated to minimize the effects. A lot of medical options are available at present to treat migraines. Some of them are OTC pain-relieving medications like aspirin or ibuprofen, acetaminophen.

Some triptans medications are extremely effective in treating migraine, which includes sumatriptan (Imitrex), frovatriptan, rizatriptan, almotriptan, zolmitriptan (Zomig), eletriptan (Relpax), etc. Doctors often prescribe these medicines to treat migraines at home. But every patient can’t take these medicines because there are some specific limitations where doctors can explain to you.

Drugs like Dihydroergotamine (DHE 45) used through nasal sprays helps to treat migraine headaches. DHE 45 should not use if you took triptans prior 24 Hrs.

Diclofenac potassium which is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory approved medicine in the treatment migraine.

Opioid medications like codeine, Anti-nausea medication, glucocorticoids like prednisone and dexamethasone can give relief from pain.

Some preventive medications of migraine are cardiovascular drugs, anti-seizure drugs, and antidepressants, etc.

If you experience a headache more than 15 days even after undergoing other treatments mentioned above, onabotulinum toxin A (Botox) injections might help you in such cases.
